The Guide to the Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles

The Old Stone House sits on the site of the original Washington Park, and across Fourth Avenue from the second Washington Park, two of the oldest professional baseball stadiums in New York. The left-center field wall from the second Washington Park is still visible on Third Avenue between First and Third Streets. The annual event presents a great opportunity for comedians, and also a veritable minefield.

Permanent Exhibition

If you're in Los Angeles, and you look up at the Hollywood sign up in the mountains, then look to the right about 2 miles, that's Griffith Park. In close-up, the open space in the lower half looks like it has horse trails on it, so that's maybe where the band members rode to in this next shot. Not so long ago, five cents went a lot further than it does now. Still, the Nickel Diner manages to recall the good ol' days when lunch counters and soda fountains were go-to destinations for hungry Angelenos. The Nickel Diner features breakfast, lunch and dinner, but the fun, nostalgic ambience and tasty breakfast menu helps kick off the day, even if all you're getting is a maple bacon donut.

Today, the building serves as a retail space (just as it was meant to be) and is one of the must-see sights in the state capital. The home has stood empty since 2002 and neglect has led to deterioration. In 2006, the DuPage County Forest Preserve District announced plans to raze the structure; local preservation groups have fought valiantly to save a piece of DuPage County — and American — history. For more information, visit the McKee Preservation Group Facebook page. Ulrich purchased 209 acres of  the original Louther Manor in 1774 from Conrad Manismith.

The iconic fisheye-lens picture was taken by Barry Feinstein who took numerous iconic album covers (such as Janis Joplin's Pearl and George Harrison's All Things Must Pass). Feinstein was also the exclusive photographer of Bob Dylan's 1966 European tour as well as his 1974 tour with The Band. To find it Collin searched in Google Images for "Topanga canyon old stone" and, after much digging, found it on multiple-listing real estate website. It was one of a series of photos for a larger house on the property that was for sale.

Today the Old Stone House serves as a historic interpretive center with a permanent exhibit about the Battle of Brooklyn as well as other exhibits connected to Brooklyn’s past and present. It also serves as an event space hosting local theater groups, concerts, and more. In addition there are lovely gardens reflecting plants of the era. We support and contribute to the needs of the present-day community through family programs, arts and cultural events and neighborhood advocacy.

Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona. The home now offers approximately 2,300 square feet of living space, including four bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The main floor holds the living area, den/study, dining room, and kitchen, as well as a spacious bedroom and vintage-style bath.

When the only way to get from point A to a distant point B was to hop aboard a stagecoach, a horse-drawn carriage designed to convey passengers and luggage along one of several well-traveled routes. This program was supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with City Councilmember David Greenfield. Andrew is a founding member and former president of the Long Beach New York Arts Council. He has participated in exhibits in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia. He received a Dean’s Grant from Nippon Steel, graduate grants from SAIC, a critics recommendation to the Vermont Studio School and the Yale Norfolk School of Art, and has served as an adjunct professor and a panel critic. He studied at The Glasgow School of Art and earned his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Missions and Ranchos are a special designation of historic homes that have such a unique position in telling the history of southern California that they deserve a separate page. The Old Stone House was constructed in three phases during the 18th century and is an example of vernacular architecture. Additions were later made, and it was used both as a residence and for business. Icons in their Own Right seeks to remedy historic erasure, champion cultural representation, and reinforce identity and pride. Makeba Rainey’s artistry is heavily influenced by hip-hop culture and Black consciousness.

It is a Historic House Trust of New York City site, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nicholas Vechte, grandson of Claes, lived in the Old Stone House during the American Revolutionary War under the British occupation. Upon his death in 1779, the farm he willed to his grandson, Nicholas R. Cowenhoven. In 1797, Cowenhoven sold the house to Jacques Cortelyou, who purchased it for the use of his newly married son, Peter.

If you’d like to visit, or become part of the Old Stone House and its partners, feel free to visit their supporting page. Like many of their neighbors, the Vechtes enslaved generations of people of African descent. These enslaved people did most of the work on the Vechte farm. They raisied grains, fruits, vegetables, oysters, and cattle for sale. They did most of the cooking and cleaning and kept the hearth fires going through long cold nights. When the Continental Congress declared independence from Great Britain in 1776, more enslaved people lived at the Old Stone House than free.

KazuNori features a 22-seat bar and no tables - the minimalist interior was designed by Glen Bell of DEX Studio, who designed several SUGARFISH locations as well as Badmaash. Hand rolls and sashimi can be ordered a la carte while to-go combos feature cut rolls and sashimi. The best options are the set menus with three, four or five hand rolls. The hand roll combos include a daily roll that alternates between toro and yellowtail. The Last Bookstore sells more than 250,000 new and used books and magazines.

But first, here's what the cover of the Byrds album looks like enlarged. Based photographer Guy Webster, who has taken many album cover photos, as you can see on his website, here. A look at one of the two upstairs bedrooms—each of which has numerous windows. The second floor is part of a two-story addition built in 1991.

Located between Mt. Washington and Highland Park in Los Angeles, California, this landmarked structure features an original facade made of riverbed stones collected from the Arroyo Seco tributary in central California. Other features (and the floor plan) follow the craftsman style. This three-story stagecoach house, circa 1780, is nestled on a quiet drive away from the main road, which was originally known as the Columbia Turnpike. Surrounded by woods and meadows, the home has been painstakingly restored and features four bedrooms, its original fireplace, wide-planked floors and more.

Hopefully, the report will make demolition efforts more difficult, although the home’s future remains uncertain. Regeneration in Place is the Old Stone House & Washington Park (OSH)’s newest contemporary art programming, featuring the artist collectives Environmental Performance Agency (EPA) and Gowanus Swim Society (GSS). Originally scheduled for Spring 2020, the format for the exhibition has shifted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent mandated social distancing. We are pleased to announce the launch of the participatory online project by the EPA, as well as a series of digital programs with GSS. Our exhibition component Nature Contained with Gowanus Swim Society will be postponed to 2021. The Golden State’s oldest standing and functioning mission, Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá was built in 1769 by Junipero Serra.

A single-storey extension has been added to the southwest corner of Old Chapel to enlarge the ground-floor space for a generous family bathroom and small study. At the centre of the main living space, a woodburning stove denotes the distinction between the lounging and dining zones. "White plasterboard covered the walls and ceiling, and carpeted floors smothered the first-floor nave, with crude interventions from the '90s haphazardly altering the building use into a compromised family home," it explained. This involved stripping back walls, reorganising the ground-floor bedrooms and creating a "grand main hall" on the first floor with an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, Tuckey Design Studio said. London practice Tuckey Design Studio has revamped a house in a converted chapel in Devon, England, revealing and restoring the building's original features. The answer is Santa Clara University, which was built in 1851.

But America’s path to independence really began in August of 1776 with the Battle of Brooklyn, the first military engagement following the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in July 1776. OSH partners with organizations including Brooklyn Parks and Recreation, Community Markets, Greenbridge, Park Slope Civic Council, and Park Slope Parents. Our garden spaces offer a natural setting of native plants, creating an outdoor interpretive space and a more healthful environment. The Old Stone House building is a reconstruction of the 1699 Vechte-Cortelyou House on land taken from the Lenape as early as 1639. Located in Washington Park, on the border of Park Slope and Gowanus in Brooklyn, it marks the place where the original Dutch farmstead stood and the culminating engagement of the 1776 Battle of Brooklyn took place.
