Take with you the persistence, courage, and curiosity you have developed throughout your education and use it to create the bright future I know that you have in front of you. Like many colleges and universities across the nation, KCAD made the difficult decision to transition our Commencement-related activities and events this spring to a virtual format to protect the health and safety of our campus community and guests in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed to foster creative opportunities for young people within the creative hub of Los Angeles, any senior-level student from Los Angeles County who plans to enroll at Otis College is eligible for this $40,000 scholarship award. “They all have very strong hardships in their life and they struggle,” says Tobias. This year, in response to COVID-19, we have once again transitioned our Master's Thesis, Excellence Awards, and Undergraduate Senior Exhibitions online. In 1928, Helen Miller Kendall, accomplished artist and wife of furniture design legend David Wolcott Kendall, established the David Wolcott Kendall Memorial School to continue her husband's legacy of creativity, education, and innovation. Now more than 90 years since its founding, Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) remains committed to this initial charge. Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) is a college of art and design located in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. This intensive, immersive experience is designed for developing creatives in high school who are 14.5 years of age or older.

Student Voices

Established in 1918, Otis College of Art and Design prepares students in the art and design capital of Los Angeles for a dynamic future in the creative economy. The College educates a diverse community of over 1,200 students in a supportive setting to become highly skilled professionals in established and emerging creative sectors. Alumni and faculty are Fulbright, MacArthur, and Guggenheim grant recipients, Oscar winners, legendary costume designers, leaders of contemporary art movements, entrepreneurs, and design stars at influential companies including Apple, Pixar, DreamWorks, Mattel, Nike, and Netflix. This richness and variety are at the heart of the ArtCenter experience, where the course of study has been reimagined to address the opportunities and demands of the contemporary world. An ArtCenter education inspires and prepares artists and designers to be the creative leaders of the future. The experience gained here will prove invaluable as our graduates pursue their personal and professional goals.

Interior Design

Summer of Art 2024 will take place in-person at Otis College’s main campus in Los Angeles, CA. Joshua Yoon, a digital UX/UI student, will be taking part in his department’s showcase. This will be Yoon’s first time sharing his work with an audience, presenting a website prototype inspired by one of his favorite bands, Lord Huron.

While most of Design Week’s events will be held on Dallas College campuses and free to the public, the Future of Fashion Design Showcase will be a ticketed event hosted at On the Levee in the Design District. Emmanuel Tobias, the Dallas College faculty member who oversees the show, has helped in its evolution since he joined the school five years ago. “The biggest thing, and what Dallas College does overall, is provide opportunity for people.

The Charles White Art and Design Scholarship invites underrepresented artists and designers to explore their passion and discover their creative futures as they continue the legacy of prominent American artist and instructor Charles White with a four-year, full tuition undergraduate scholarship. Otis College offers two graduate MFA programs in Fine Arts and Graphic Design, each led by renowned faculty who are redefining their respective fields. As a graduate student, you’ll develop your craft in a rigorous, supportive environment that provides a strong foundation for you as a professional artist. Internationally renowned artist Robert Vargas (@therobertvargas) will receive an honorary doctorate degree from ArtCenter College of Design and deliver the commencement address at the College’s spring graduation ceremony on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 10 a.m.

A contemporary artist known for his mixed-media portraits, murals and live events, Vargas has painted murals around the globe, from his native Boyle Heights neighborhood to Paris. His work-in-progress “Angelus,” in downtown Pershing Square, is being painted on the side of a 14-story apartment building and is set to break the Guinness World Record for the largest mural completed by a single artist. The Student Exhibition is a celebration of the artists and a way for the community to see and buy their hard work. Work from all majors will be shown throughout four floors of the main campus building at 17 Fountain St. NW. This exhibition highlights the resilience and flexibility of our graduates.

NiEtta Reynolds, another student of Hornbuckle’s, hopes to use her photography to stimulate conversations around mental health. “Being in the class is actually giving me…visual representation… It’s putting me in a position for people to ask me about my work,” she says. Refine and define a compelling creative vision to become a fine artist capable of transforming our way of engaging with the world.

Otis College Extension offers a large spectrum of both weekend and after-school programs that will advance your child’s interest and abilities in art and design. With courses in numerous disciplines, our lineup of programs will meet whatever goals your child is looking to reach. While there is no replacement for seeing art and design in person, without the ability to gather in a physical space, it seemed natural to develop an online platform to showcase the amazing work of KCAD’s 2021 graduates. The MFA Fine Arts graduate students at Otis College are advanced artists engaged and committed to exploring an art practice in its various forms, traditions, and contexts. Their studies culminate with an MFA thesis exhibition from each student presented in the Bolsky Gallery.

The Old Stone House sits on the site of the original Washington Park, and across Fourth Avenue from the second Washington Park, two of the oldest professional baseball stadiums in New York. The left-center field wall from the second Washington Park is still visible on Third Avenue between First and Third Streets. The annual event presents a great opportunity for comedians, and also a veritable minefield.

Permanent Exhibition

If you're in Los Angeles, and you look up at the Hollywood sign up in the mountains, then look to the right about 2 miles, that's Griffith Park. In close-up, the open space in the lower half looks like it has horse trails on it, so that's maybe where the band members rode to in this next shot. Not so long ago, five cents went a lot further than it does now. Still, the Nickel Diner manages to recall the good ol' days when lunch counters and soda fountains were go-to destinations for hungry Angelenos. The Nickel Diner features breakfast, lunch and dinner, but the fun, nostalgic ambience and tasty breakfast menu helps kick off the day, even if all you're getting is a maple bacon donut.

The iconic fisheye-lens picture was taken by Barry Feinstein who took numerous iconic album covers (such as Janis Joplin's Pearl and George Harrison's All Things Must Pass). Feinstein was also the exclusive photographer of Bob Dylan's 1966 European tour as well as his 1974 tour with The Band. To find it Collin searched in Google Images for "Topanga canyon old stone" and, after much digging, found it on multiple-listing real estate website. It was one of a series of photos for a larger house on the property that was for sale.

Today the Old Stone House serves as a historic interpretive center with a permanent exhibit about the Battle of Brooklyn as well as other exhibits connected to Brooklyn’s past and present. It also serves as an event space hosting local theater groups, concerts, and more. In addition there are lovely gardens reflecting plants of the era. We support and contribute to the needs of the present-day community through family programs, arts and cultural events and neighborhood advocacy.

Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona. The home now offers approximately 2,300 square feet of living space, including four bedrooms and two full bathrooms. When the only way to get from point A to a distant point B was to hop aboard a stagecoach, a horse-drawn carriage designed to convey passengers and luggage along one of several well-traveled routes. Andrew is a founding member and former president of the Long Beach New York Arts Council. He has participated in exhibits in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia. He received a Dean’s Grant from Nippon Steel, graduate grants from SAIC, a critics recommendation to the Vermont Studio School and the Yale Norfolk School of Art, and has served as an adjunct professor and a panel critic. He studied at The Glasgow School of Art and earned his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Missions and Ranchos are a special designation of historic homes that have such a unique position in telling the history of southern California that they deserve a separate page. The Old Stone House was constructed in three phases during the 18th century and is an example of vernacular architecture. Additions were later made, and it was used both as a residence and for business. Icons in their Own Right seeks to remedy historic erasure, champion cultural representation, and reinforce identity and pride. It is a Historic House Trust of New York City site, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nicholas Vechte, grandson of Claes, lived in the Old Stone House during the American Revolutionary War under the British occupation. Upon his death in 1779, the farm he willed to his grandson, Nicholas R. Cowenhoven. In 1797, Cowenhoven sold the house to Jacques Cortelyou, who purchased it for the use of his newly married son, Peter.

Like many of their neighbors, the Vechtes enslaved generations of people of African descent. These enslaved people did most of the work on the Vechte farm. They raisied grains, fruits, vegetables, oysters, and cattle for sale. They did most of the cooking and cleaning and kept the hearth fires going through long cold nights. When the Continental Congress declared independence from Great Britain in 1776, more enslaved people lived at the Old Stone House than free.

KazuNori features a 22-seat bar and no tables - the minimalist interior was designed by Glen Bell of DEX Studio, who designed several SUGARFISH locations as well as Badmaash. Our visionary approach is based on the College’s conservatory-like approach to teaching and learning; a desire for rich, intercultural and transdisciplinary dialogue; and a mandate to provide students innovative learning and making spaces. Each student in the photography program has a different area of concentration, providing a variety of perspectives for exhibits. Another student, Teresa Jackson, candidly photographs Black men and young boys to combat stereotyping. The Arts Month events are, to Jackson, a way the school advocates for students while helping them get their work in front of key stakeholders. “I think…art is a really important part of our community and our wellbeing overall… Research shows that…[whether] you’re a consumer of art or you’re an artist, there’s the opportunity to have a positive impact,” she says.

Every April, Dallas celebrates creativity and the arts during the city’s branded Arts Month. This year, Dallas College is participating by showcasing student work in its first ever Design Week, which lasts from April 22 through April 25. Programs taking part include Digital Art and Design, Architecture and Interior Design, Fashion Marketing, and Fashion Design, each of which will have a dedicated event where students can share individual projects or presentations with the public.

In the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, KCAD students’ educational experiences are more hands-on than those typically found in creative degree programs within larger universities. KCAD’s faculty includes accomplished artists, designers, and scholars who become mentors and role models, leveraging their deep professional experience to help each student make the most of their education. Summer Youth Camps at Otis College invite young creatives aged 5-14 years to explore art and expression through exciting programs at one of the nation’s top art and design colleges.
